Prospective One-Health Surveillance in the Darién Gap, Panamá
ABSTRACT
The Darién Gap represents one of the most biologically complex and epidemiologically understudied regions of the Neotropics. This initiative implements a prospective One-Health surveillance platform integrating human, animal, and environmental data to detect emerging and endemic pathogens with epidemic potential. Through community-embedded fieldwork, molecular diagnostics, vector ecology, and risk modeling, the project aims to characterize transmission dynamics, identify early signals of spillover, and strengthen local resilience to infectious threats. By linking scientific innovation with community participation, this program establishes a scalable model for proactive epidemic preparedness in remote tropical settings.
SHOR BIO
Dr. Jean Paul Carrera is the Director of the Carson Centre for Research in Ecosystem and Health in Darién, Panamá, where he leads multidisciplinary programs integrating One-Health science, community engagement, and ecosystem-based research. He also serves as Senior Researcher at the Regional Centre for Vaccine and Bioproducts Development (CRIVB) in Panama, contributing to national strategies in emerging pathogens, genomic surveillance, and pandemic preparedness. His work bridges field epidemiology, molecular virology, and ecological health, with a focus on developing innovative surveillance platforms in remote and high-biodiversity regions such as the Darién Gap.
